<description>Camera Antipodea provides architectural photographs by Richard Mahoney. The focus is on representing a New Zealand that is passing. A project is underway to document rural and industrial decay through architectural images. The emphasis is on displaying the exterior and interior of early buildings and structures, both tightly framed and within the surrounding landscape.</description>

<description> Werner Herzog on the scarcity of Images and Image-makers ...

 ``It is simply a fact—there are only a few images left. ``When
I look out here I see everything is cluttered up. There are hardly any
images to be found. One has to dig deep down like an archaeologist; one
has to search through this violated landscape to find something. ``Naturally,
there is risk involved, one that I wouldn't avoid. I see only a few
people who take risks in order to change this misery—the misery of
having no images left, none that are adequate. We desperately need
images, those images that are relevant and adequate to our level of
civilization—ones that correspond to those deep inside ourselves.''

It's a habit to carry my old canvas fly fishing bag. Its just large enough for the F4 body , a couple of lenses, and my MasterSix meter (don't know why I always carry the light meter, I just do). I find myself constantly looking for images, and the little cameras are useful for rough and ready prep shots. Loaded with B&amp;amp;W they give a pretty decent idea of substance and contrast. A typical day ...

Here in Oxford its been drizzling for the past day or two. Although it is still winter, this is typical of early spring. We get more than our share. Living at the base of the foothills leading up to the Southern Alps a lot spills over from the West Coast. One of my main concerns, out in the field, is how to deal with it.

I'm most interested in documenting rural decay and I mostly shoot locally, in nearby towns and farms. Here, unless I'm on a hillside, the most common difficulty is in establishing a decent, clear view of the subject, often a building in decline.

<description> Why have you chosen to use a greyhound in your company logo?

For those curious about the greyhound in the logo I'll give a few details. The Indica et Buddhica logo is Elmo (a.k.a. Redford Bale), the first retired racing greyhound we adopted. My wife and I had lived with a few `rescue' dogs over the years but when Rogue our Rottweiler died we settled on what we'd always wanted, greyhounds.

<description> Dust continues to be the bane of large-format photographers, but all is not lost ...

Dust and fluff and little specks of this and that have always been a source of profound irritation to large-format photographers. Roll film is loaded within the controlled, filtered environment of factories so is usually dust-free. But sheet film is generally loaded into sheet film holders by the photographer himself, most often in less than ideal conditions. And the dust that can find itself onto the film can be ruinous.

      <link>http://camera-antipodea.indica-et-buddhica.com/news/lamp-as-light-table</link>
<description> There are those who use light tables and those who just use lamps ...

I've never much liked the light tables I've come across. They definitely help when sorting large numbers of transparencies, but those I've seen are either too small for large-format film or just too big – what on earth do you do with them when they're not being used? There is also the issue of illumination. Most are also too dim, especially if one wants to see the details that a drum scanner will be pulling from the shadows. My preference is simply to use one of my desk lamps. With a linen tester I can pick out all that I need. And by moving the transparency closer or further away I can adjust the brightness. Crude, perhaps, but it works.

<description> Decent, durable photographic equipment has never been inexpensive ...

Well made photographic equipment – the sort that takes constant use and lasts the distance – has always been expensive. Being practical, many photographers have often just made the best of, or just got by with, what they can afford and what is available. A good number have even taken a certain pleasure in making their own, using what is to hand.

I agree that the quality of the final photograph is what counts the most. Still, people are often curious about the equipment used and whether the photographer's workflow is analog (film) or digital or both. Here, then, is a brief list of what I am currently using .
